The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Saturday decided at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) that Mahendra Patel will be its next president.

“I will be stepping down as president. Mahendra Patel, who is the senior vice-president, will take over as the president from July 9,” said Chintan Parikh, president, GCCI.

Mahendra Patel is head of the Mamata Group of industries. The remaining office-bearers of the GCCI will be chosen by the High Powered Committee (HPC) which has now been given a new name, the M-powered Apex Committee.

Even this year, members of the committee (who were supposed to be chosen through election) will be chosen by selection only. “The office-bearers will be selected through the selection process for one more year. This was decided after the discussion that took place at EGM,” said Parikh. Utkarsh Shah initiated the discussion which was passed by consensus.

The executive committee meeting of the GCCI will be held on June 18, 2011, and the AGM (annual general meeting) will be held on July 9, 2011. While everything on the agenda of the EGM was passed unanimously, there was some opposition to the suggestion that the meeting be adjourned as the required quorum was not present.

“As 225 members reported for the meeting on time, the need to adjourn the meeting did not arise. Also, all the clauses were discussed in detail by all the members,” said Parikh.  Now the GCCI will be applying for registration by June 30, 2011.
