The Karnavati Club on Thursday filed an affidavit before the Gujarat high court stating that they will pay a sum of Rs10 crore to the state government. However, the club has further prayed that the government in return regularise the construction.

Gujarat high court had last week asked Karnavati Club to deposit Rs 10 crores by June 30 in a case of encroachment on a piece of government land. The court had also directed the club to file an affidavit by March 30 undertaking that they will deposit the money. Followed by the direction, the club on Thursday filed the affidavit stating that they would pay the money to the government.

In the affidavit the club further gave consent for the withdrawal of 10 crores which are deposited with the court and interest of Rs 2 crore on the said amount. Advocate for the club, Sudhir Nanavati, stated that the club had initially deposited a sum of Rs 10 crores with the court and after calculating the interest on the said amount, the figure touches Rs 12 crore, which the club has given consent for the withdrawal by the government. With this 12 crore, the aggregate amount to be paid by the club to the government for the land has come to Rs 22 crores and they are ready to pay more if the government demands. Further, the club has in return prayed that the government should now regularise the land and give permission for the construction plans of tennis court, swimming pool, office and a hall.

The club in the affidavit has also asked to dismiss the said petition filed by Pravin Patel who was  former director of the club, with cost. Patel has filed the present PIL challenging the construction of the club which is on government land. Talking about the contents in the affidavit regarding Patel, Nanavati stated that Patel was part of the meeting where the decision of construction of the club was taken and he had also approved the said decision. The hearing of the case is now adjourned to April 21, as the advocate of Patel sought for time to reply.
