About a thousand personnel of the Ahmedabad city police watched the action-packed Bollywood movie Singham which was screened specially for them on Tuesday in a posh multiplex in the city. The cops, sitting alongside some of their senior most officers, clapped, whistled and hailed inspector Bajirao Singham (played by Ajay Devgan) who keeps on blowing away the villainous politicians for playing with the law.

With this, all the four police commissionerates in Gujarat -- Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Ahmedabad — have screened Singham.

The movie, which deals with issues pertaining to policing and hassles associated with it, has been hailed by the men in khaki unanimously.

Screened at Wide Angle, the movie was watched by city police commissioner Sudhir Sinha, joint commissioner of police (JCP), sector—I, Ajay Tomar, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), zone—I, Sandeep Singh and various other senior and junior police officials.

The cops who have watched the movie in other cities have declared it to be ‘inspirational’. In the film, the police have been portrayed as better citizens than the politician who wants to exploit the law for his own selfish purposes. But for Gujarat’s cops, it seems to be much more than mere entertainment.

Although cops refused to comment on the similarities of the police-politician nexus portrayed in the movie and in the real world, a few opined that there are a number of stories in this connection. Many police officers who were considered ‘best’ are in prison and political interference has also surfaced during investigation of cases.

Though police officials avoided comparisons, city police commissioner Sudhir Sinha candidly admitted that the movie does address some problems which, he said, are needed to be solved. He opined that in time to come, police reforms such as making the department an independent body will happen.

JCP Tomar said that there are problems in the police department which the movie has shown. However, he refused to elaborate on the troubles cops face on a daily basis.
