She becomes the first woman to be appointed to one of the country's highest law offices.

After a woman president (Pratibha Patil) and woman speaker of the Lok Sabha (Meira Kumar), India will now have its first top woman law officer.
Eminent lawyer Indira Jaisingh has been appointed additional solicitor-general of India.
An official source said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has appointed Jaisingh, a well-known Supreme Court lawyer and human rights activist, to the post.
The source said her name was cleared by the Union law ministry.
