“Dear Praveen, Our corade got over yesterday. I also managed to get the lyrics and translations of folksongs related to the crafts letters. I also got acquainted with a few castes and their respective religions. Along corade ride with rowers singing folksongs just made my day.

I visited a few more temples and am also looking for some folktales related to the craft. Craft documentation has been an experience I will always treasure, yours sincerely.

One would get the impression that the above lines are taken from an e-mail interaction. But, as a matter of fact, this is an interaction between a professor and his students via a postcard to exchange experience of craft documentation project from a small village in Karnataka!

Today’s youngsters might laugh at the thought of using postcards on college campuses in an era where interaction is just a tweet or an SMS away.  But meet Prof Praveen Nahar, a faculty at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, and he defies this popular notion of communication within the institute. He insists that his students update him through postcards about the progress and ideas from craft documentation that they are doing in distant lands.

Prof Nahar, a graduate from IIT, is known on the campus for not using cell phone and preferring to be contacted on his landline number at the institute- be it his clients for consultancy work, colleagues, family members or students! Moreover, Prof Nahar does not have television set at home. Neither does he own a vehicle to commute. He, however claims, he is probably amongst the earliest bunch of people who started using e-mails, back in late 80s.
