The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA) has entered into an agreement with Ahmedabad municipal corporation (AMC) to provide Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) passes for visitors to the institute's cultural festival, Chaos-2011.

The passes, which allow the holder free travel in BRTS buses, would be given to all people buying tickets for Chaos-2011 in an effort to encourage them to travel by bus while going for the festival.

Sources at the institute said that out of the 30 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission calculated as the carbon footprint of Chaos-201o at the institute, around 40% was caused by vehicles used by visitors to the festival.

But Chaos-2011 organisers feel that this can be brought down if visitors are encouraged to use public transport instead of
private vehicles for the festival.

The team of IIMA students handling the arrangements for Chaos-2011 says that offering BRTS passes with the cultural festival's passes would help reduce the carbon impact of the event.

Considering the large number of students expected from other B-schools and colleges, the organizers have also arranged for buses to carry students from the railway station and the airport.

"A batch of 100 students visiting the campus would generally use 35 autos for travel," said a member of the organizing team. "This will now come down to a bus or two." He added that this is perhaps the first time that such an initiative has been taken for an event by an educational institute.

"We want people to know that Chaos is not only about entertainment, but also about being socially responsible," Pranshu Gupta, secretary, Chaos-2011, said.

"More than 50,000 people are expected to visit the campus for the festival. What better way to spread the message about greenhouse emissions than giving them BRTS passes?"
Glen D'Silva, secretary, media cell, IIMA, said they were thankful to the AMC that the civic body was supporting their initiative.

"We all talk about climate change and the need to do something," D'Silva said. "This effort by Team Chaos is a small step by the students of IIMA towards fighting climate change. Moreover, seeing students using buses for travel might encourage others to use public transport in the city."
