The Indian Air Force (IAF) and defence ministry have turned a deaf ear to request for support made by a war widow.

Shalini Jetley, the widow of war hero Sarang aerobatic team member Wg Cdr Vikas Jetley who lost life to a helicopter crash while on duty, has been seeking a teaching job in an IAF school to support her family.

However, IAF has not reacted yet, forcing her to write to defence minister AK Antony to look into the matter.

In her letter to Antony, Shalini, a mother of two young children, has said that after her husband Wng Cdr Jetley went into coma following a chopper crash at Air Force Station Yelahanka on February 2, 2007, a job was offered to her with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL’s) Delhi liaison office.

She had to soon quit the job as she could not manage looking after her two children and aged in-laws while doing the job. She later approached The Air Force School (TAFS), Subroto Park, New Delhi, for a teaching job to support her family.

However, her requests for a primary school teachership did not get a positive response from the school officials, the letter says.

“I am qualified to teach high school children and have undergone my post graduation and BEd from Lady Irwin College, New Delhi. If I can get a job there, it will be a great help and I will be able to spend more time with my children, supporting my family with whatever salary I get. I hope your good offices will be able to make a difference,” the letter states.

She has also complained that her husband’s pension, gratuity, leave encashment and insurance payments have not yet been cleared.

“My husband was invalidated from the IAF on the afternoon of January 6, 2010, the day he died after four years of coma. But his dues have not been cleared to date. Unfortunately no help has been forthcoming. I am writing directly to you as I don’t have the energy left to continue pleading with IAF officials for the dues and a job that will make a big difference to my situation,” she states in her letter to the defence minister.
