Benumbed with shock and sorrow, around 20 friends and relatives of 21-year-old Amanpreet Singh, who died in the Delhi High Court blast, collected his body from the Sucheta Kripalani Hospital's mortuary on Thursday.

The group said they had not come to terms with the "terrible tragedy".

“It is a terrible loss for the family, he was just a kid,” said Praveen Singh, a close family friend. “He was just beginning his career.”

“I am completely dumbfounded. Such things happen rarely and sadly this was one of those rare occasions,” he added.

However, strict security at the hospital meant that only a couple of visitors were being allowed to enter, which did not go down well with the group.

A private security guard tried to stop some of the relatives when they tried to force their way in, and a confrontation was avoided thanks to timely intervention of Delhi Police personnel stationed nearby.

Amanpreet was interning with a lawyer at the Delhi High Court. On the ill-fated Wednesday morning, he forgot to take along his robe when he visited the court, due to which he had to queue up for an entry pass at Gate No 5, the site of the blast.

Tragically, the six-foot tall Panjab University law student, had gone to the court despite strong opposition from his mother, who wanted him to stay home.

"He had slept late last night, but he said he had an important case to observe," his brother Ravinder said.
