If plans of Tapi district police go well, migrant employees at Kakrapar Atomic Power Station near Vyara will have to face police interrogation and verification. The police want to maintain a record of even the minute details of all the employees who hail from other states and are working at the plant.

Alerted after the heightened threat perception on nuclear power plants in India, Tapi police doesn't want to take any chances. The security of the atomic power plant at Kakrapar is their top priority.

To prevent any unwanted incident at the power station, police are planning a drive to verify antecedents of all the employees at the plant. Cops want that employees, including security personnel, go through the verification process at the concerned police station.
Sharad Singhal, district superintendent of police (DSP), Tapi said that the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which provides security to the power plant, does issue I-cards to employees.

However, a detailed verification of employees' whereabouts and contacts is required. "Verification process will also require reference of another person working at the power station. In case any incident takes place and behaviour of a particular employee is found to be suspicious, we can at least initiate a hunt for him," the DSP said.

Sources said that considering the critical nature of the security at atomic power stations, state director general of police (DGP) has also given his approval for the verification drive. Proportion of migrant employees is higher than that of the locals and this makes the verification process more necessary, they added. Apart from permanent employees, there are a number of migrants working on ad-hoc and contract basis at the plant.

"People from Orissa, Jharkhand and other states are found to be working at Kakrapar atomic power station. We can't take chances with the security of the station. Threat to nuclear power plants is high and we have to remain alert," Singhla further said.

To make the verification process comprehensive, Tapi police are planning to take help of police departments of other states also. In letters forwarded to heads of different state police, Tapi police have requested them to furnish details of persons they ask for.

Tapi police do maintain a database of all the employees at the power station. The database is updated monthly by the cops and it is cross-verified by top officials of the power station.
