The Gujarat home department has written to the ministry of home affairs (MHA), Government of India to replace the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS), the dream project of central home minister P Chidambaram, with the Integrated Information Technology (IIT) that has been initiated by the state government itself.

Sources in state home department said that a proposal of request to replace the CCTNS with IIT has been sent to the central government and if the latter replies in due course, the state could implement the project in next six months or in a year's time.

Sources in the state police department told DNA that IIT was more advanced and convenient than CCTNS. However, there are many similarities among the two technologies. But IIT seems to be more user friendly, sources said.

On the other side, the state government has also not stopped work in the direction of completing the CCTNS project. The state crime record bureau (SCRB) has already sent all the data and details of the crime, criminals with all their personal details and their modus operandi to the state home department, which in a short time may come up with new software.

Sources in the state home department told DNA that all the details will be connected to a server and this will eventually be connected to all the police stations and offices of senior cops of the state.

Sources said that the details of the criminals from any part of the state will be accessed by any officer, at any time sitting in his or her office.

Sources also said that the IIT project is under consideration for the last few years, but now it is in the final stages and may be implemented soon. Sources said that it will not be easy for criminals to escape and remain underground for long once the IIT project is implemented.
