An ultimatum was issued to the striking junior doctors and interns of various medical college hospitals of the state on Saturday by the authorities, but the protesters have vowed to carry on with their fight.

The Gujarat Association of Resident Doctors (GARD), an informal body of resident doctors of Gujarat, has decided to continue their strike demanding better stipend. Meanwhile, a team from the state health department including health secretary Amarjeet Singh, Ravi Saxena, additional health secretary Meena Bhatt, Civil PG director BD Mankad, VS Hospital director Pankaj Patel along with deans of all the district civil medical colleges met the students on Saturday.

They have given them an ultimatum asking them to report to duty in the next 24 hours or face suspension from their respective colleges. However, GARD members plan to continue their agitation in spite of the ultimatum.

They allege that the stipend paid to interns and junior doctors in Gujarat is the lowest compared to other states in the country. They also alleged that they have been threatened by none other than chief minister, Narendra Modi who has allegedly asked the administration to 'crush'  the strike if it is not withdrawn. The deans of respective colleges have been asked to remove the students from the hostel on Monday if they continue their agitation, said a Civil hospital source.

However, the GARD members refused to budge from their position irrespective of the consequence.

Commenting on the ultimatum, a GARD member said "They are trying to beak our strength by such threats but we will fight for our rights till we get justice."
