Kanimozhi, Rajya Sabha member and daughter of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, was accorded a grand reception by her family and party cadre at the Chennai airport when s she arrived here from Delhi on Saturday.

This is Kanimozhi’s first visit to Chennai since she was arrested in connection with the Rs 200 crore 2G Spectrum pay off case on May 20.

She was granted bail by the Delhi high court on November 28 after spending 194 days in jail.

Karunanidhi and both his wives (Dayalu Ammal and Rajathi Ammal) along with their children were at the airport to receive Kanimozhi who was accompanied by her husband Aravind, son Aditya and a pose of DMK leaders. Immediately after her arrival, she along with her father left for her CIT Colony residence in Karunanidhi’s custom built Toyota Alphard luxury van.

The DMK had made elaborate arrangements to receive the Rajya Sabha MP who now has an aura of a ‘living martyr’ because of her prolonged incarceration. The entire Mount Road stretch between the airport and the DMK headquarters has been decorated with giant cut outs of Kanimozhi and Karunanidhi.

“I am happy that I am back in Chennai. I am thankful to my people and the party for their support for the pain I underwent in the past six months,” she told reporters before leaving the airport.

“Now she is going to be the poster girl of the DMK both in Delhi and in Tamil Nadu. Karunanidhi knows well that only a woman opponent can take on chief minister J Jayalalithaa. There is a general sympathy for Kanimozhi for her ordeal in the jail and this is what Karunanidhi wants to exploit,” said Gnani Shankaran, political commentator and a long-time DMK watcher.
