A suspended police inspector in Goa was today arrested for his alleged nexus with an Israeli drug peddler.

Deputy inspector general of police Ravindra Yadav said inspector Ashish Shirodkar has been arrested.

Shirodkar was earlier heading the Anti-Narcotics Cell, tasked with curbing increasing drug menace in the tourist state.

Yaniv Benaim alias Atala, the Israeli drug peddler, was caught on hidden camera revealing that he used to procure narcotics, stolen from the court locker, from Shirodkar.

Shirodkar, along with constable Saish Pokle, was subsequently booked for criminal conspiracy and corruption by Crime Branch, which is investigating the case.

A senior police officer said more charges are likely to be brought against Shirodkar after the probe concludes.

Shirodkar had moved the district court for anticipatory bail, but hearing on his plea remained inconclusive yesterday. The hearing will resume tomorrow.

The Crime Branch told the court that all drugs seized in Goa since 2000 had not been destroyed, and they are lying in godown under court custody.

Police have said if the drugs were found missing from the godown, they would be recovered from Shirodkar.

"Confidential information has been sought from authorities concerned with respect to the allegations narrated in the video clippings," deputy superintendent of police Chandrakant Salgaoncar had told the court.
