Goa's capital city of Panaji will now be connected with the far off places in the state through picturesque inland waterways.

Goa river navigation department comtemplates furnishing a proposal for constructing launches (boats)connecting Panaji to areas like Vasco, Pilgao and Aldona.

"We will submit the detailed project report to the union urban development ministry seeking funds under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM)," state river navigation minister Ramakrishna Dhavalikar told reporters on Saturday.

The ministry intends to construct the launches with the capacity to carry 100 passengers at a time.

The plan to connect Panaji to the port town of Vasco through a ship coincides with the state government's proposal to construct a sea-link connecting these two urban localities.

"We will be calling the JNURM officials in the state to inform them about this project and inspect it," Dhavalikar said.

Panaji, which was one amongst the many towns qualified under JNURM lost the opportunity to upgrade its infrastructure due to inordinate delays on the part of state government.   The state level steering committee chaired by leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar has now taken up the task of preparing a detailed report of various projects, funds for which will be sought under JNURM.

Dhavalikar today said that there is huge demand to use inland waterways to ferry passengers and tourists. "There is also a proposal from a company which wants to connect Goa to Pune through waterways. The concept is still in the primary stage," he added.
