He was not transferred from the detection of crime branch (DCB) for 13 years, when few officers have been able to complete even four years there. However, DySP Tarun Barot was shifted immediately after his name figured in the affidavit submitted in the Gujarat high court by IPS officer Satish Verma in connection with the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

With a record of eliminating 10 people in four encounters, the DySP has been a favourite with many governments of the state ever since he joined the police department.

He joined the DCB as a police sub-inspector and had become a deputy superintendent of police (DySP) when he was transferred. He currently has additional responsibility of managing the 'third round of security' for chief minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier, every time he was transferred from the DCB, he got it revoked by claiming that he was under threat from criminals belonging to the Wahab and Abdul Latif gangs, many of whose members he is said to have killed in encounters.

In 1992, he got an out-of-turn promotion when he seized the weapons of the notorious terrorist, Lal Singh, in Vasna. He is reported to have played an important role in the encounter in which Abdul Latif was killed, as also in the encounter in which four Kashmiris were eliminated in Vatwa. He was also present in the Sameer Khan encounter as well as in the encounter in which Ishrat Jahan was killed.
His role in wiping out criminal gangs in the city had brought him close to the governments of the day. He was once considered a pro-Congress police officer. He had once tried to assault the late BJP leader Ashok Bhatt in the year 1992 during a Ram Diva programme. His image of an anti-BJP police officer was eventually erased when he played a role in the encounter in which Abdul Latif was killed. Sources say he killed the dreaded gangster Abdul Latif in 1995 during an operation led by IPS officer AK Suroliya.
