A former Mr Delhi was among four persons arrested by the police on Thursday for the murder of 17-year-old Ribhu Chawla, who was killed even after his family paid a ransom of Rs 20 lakh.

Ribhu’s body was found near Ryan International School, south Delhi, on Wednesday, a day after he went missing. He could not be rescued from his kidnappers though more than 150 police personnel were put on the job.

The police arrested Rocky, 27, Rishabh, 24, Sukhvinder, 22, and Gaurav, 20, who allegedly kidnapped and murdered Ribhu. Rocky was a gym instructor and had won the Mr Delhi contest in 1997 and 1998. All the accused were unemployed and had huge debts. Rocky had debts totalling Rs30 lakh due to his racecourse betting habit.

“Ribhu was kidnapped from Vikaspuri, west Delhi, in a WagonR which belonged to Rishabh’s father. The car’s number plate was changed to mislead witnesses,” said joint police commissioner Ajay Kashyap. “A call was made at 3.30pm by Ribhu’s friends informing the police about the incident, after which more than 150 policemen were on the case.”

The kidnappers took Ribhu to the Karnal highway. They made eight calls to Ribhu’s father, Sanjay Chawla, from Ribhu’s mobile phone.

“Sanjay spoke to his son when the abductors called up,” said Kashyap, adding, “This was done so that his father would be 100% sure the abductors had his son. They changed the number plate after this.”

The kidnappers initially demanded Rs60 lakh, but lowered the amount to Rs20 lakh. Ribhu’s father kept the money at a deserted bus-stop, as demanded by the kidnappers, but they killed Ribhu after collecting the amount.

Ribhu was strangled by the kidnappers in the car with the nylon rope with which they had bound his hands. The men then disposed of Ribhu’s body near Ryan International School, Vasant Kunj.

Despite knowing about the incident from the start, the police did not accompany Ribhu’s father when he went to deposit the ransom amount.

The police could not even trace the calls, which came from the same mobile phone.
