It seems Amit Shah, the former minister of state for home affairs of Gujarat, has been alive and kicking in Gujarat politics even after living in exile for his alleged involvement in face encounter cases.

Shah’s writ was on display when he was reappointed on board of Gujarat State Cooperative Bank (GSCB), the apex body of all cooperative banks in the state, on Saturday. Shah has been nominated as a representative of Ahmedabad District Cooperative (ADC) Bank on the board. However, Narhari Amin, cooperative leader and ex-deputy chief minister of Gujarat, has termed Shah’s nomination in absentia as violation of rules.

Terming Shah’s appointment illegal, Amin said that a director to be nominated by the district cooperative bank has to fill in the form prepared by the representative of the district collector and submit it in his presence.

"However, the bank's chairman suggested Amit Shah's name as a representative of ADC Bank on board of GSCB orally, which was approved by the representative of the collector after taking oral consensuses of directors," said Amin.  Amin alleged that representative of the district collector of Ahmedabad was misusing power wrested in him at the behest of chief minister Narendra Modi. "The collector's representative has illegally appointed Shah on board of GSCB," he said.

However, ruling out any foul play, ADC bank authorities said that followed all laid down procedures. "We have put forward our representative on board of GSCB in presence of deputy collector. It was his jurisdiction whether the procedure was legal or illegal," said Ajay Patel, chairman of Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank (ADCB).

Similarly, deputy collector Ashok Patel, who attended the ADC Bank's meeting as representative of the district collector, said that it is not necessary for the contestant to remain present during the selection process.
