While the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has taken over the custody of notorious gangster and extortionist Mukesh Harjani, it has so far been revealed how Harjani lured gullible youth into gang by doing favours to them. Police sources say the gangster would help young people, who in turn would oblige him by working for him.

The gangster, who runs his criminal activities in Vadodara and Anand, is wanted in at least three murder cases and several cases of kidnapping and extortion. The ATS will investigate his role in various extortion cases.

Harjani was arrested about two weeks back and was in the custody of the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB). The ATS has taken Harjani from DCB, while Anand police has taken two of his accomplices from the DCB on transfer warrant.

For the Gujarat police, Harjani is believed to be a prize catch. So far he has revealed his modus operandi of luring youth from Punjab and other parts of the country to join his gang.

According to a police source, Harjani was doing everything to help his men by giving them cash and even trying to arrange their marriages. The source cited the example of Ravindarpal Singh Mann alias Vicky, who joined the gangster's team after being befriended by Harjani through an incident that took place on the road.

"Vicky was working as a cleaner in a truck and was on his way to repair a punctured tyre. He asked for lift in Harjani's car. On the way, the gangster was able to lure Vicky to work with him,'' he said.

Later, said the source, Vicky turned out to be very helpful to Harjani as he managed to get other young people from different areas of Punjab and Chandigarh to his join the gangster's gang.

Harjani also managed to find a suitable girl for Vicky, paid for his marriage and also helped him to get a house. "Harjani later used both the husband and wife in his criminal activities," the police source said.

There are many young people whom Harjani was paying money and was luring them to his fold by obliging them directly or indirectly, say police.
