They belonged to well-to-do families, had pocket money that would have been the envy of their peers and were on their way to a good career. But drug habit led two youth, an engineering and MBA student, astray so much so that they blew away their college fee on procuring drugs.

To pay the fee they came up with a brilliant idea - steal from a mobile shop.

But thieving didn't turn out to be as easy as it seemed and they were soon caught by the cops. Vastrapur police nabbed the two college students on Friday night for allegedly trying to steal valuables from a mobile shop in the area. The two had squandered Rs22,000 meant as college fees for one of them, on drugs.

To later pay the fee they hatched a plan to rob a shop, police said. The two were identified as Dharmik Patel, 23, a second semester student of MBA at HL College and Jayesh alias Jai Joshi, 22, who is in the sixth semester of automobile engineering at Indus Institute of Technology and Engineering, Racharda.

They are friends and residents of Goyal Terrace, Near Judges Bungalow police chowki and Premjyot Tower in Subhash Chowk area respectively.

Vastrapur police inspector SB Trivedi said that Dharmik and Jayesh reached the mobile shop in Akash Tower on an Eterno scooter at around midnight on Friday. “They smashed a CCTV camera so as to avoid being detected but a guard at the shop was alerted. He immediately contacted the police control-room and we rushed to the spot in no time,” he said.

Sensing danger, the two tried to run away but were chased by cops. “They confessed to using the college fee on brown sugar,” Trivedi said.

The PI further said that families of both the youth had no idea about their drug habit. He said that Dharmik had even sold his laptop and mobile phones to raise money for his drug habit.

Dharmik's father Kirit Patel owns a electronics gadget showroom at Chinubhai Tower. Similarly, Jayesh's father Sudhir Joshi has a manufacturing unit of lathe machines in Bapunagar.
