It was a double loss for Chetna Patel. After losing her husband in a road accident, Patel lost her grievously injured son due to transfusion of the wrong blood group at LG Hospital, where the boy was being treated.

Patel used to live with her husband Mahesh and 14-year-old son Michael at Sonal apartment on Varachha road in Surat. While coming to Ahmedabad on August 22, their car met with an accident on Vadodara expressway. Her husband died on the spot, while Michael was critically injured and had to be admitted to Maninagar-based L G Hospital.

According to Patel, two doctors of LG Hospital, Dr Nadeem and Dr Gaurav, had started the treatment. After a blood test, they instructed their staff to give blood ‘B+’ group to Michael, whose original blood group was ‘O+’.

After the treatment, Patel took her son back home, but Michael’s health began to deteriorate after the treatment. She then took him to Upasana hospital in Mehsana, where doctors found that his body was turning pale and weak.

After conducting some tests, the doctors told Patel that Michael’s worsening condition was due to some blood infection. Patel then took him to Prathma blood bank on August 25, where it was established that Michael’s blood group was ‘O+’. But the diagnosis happened too late and Michael died on August 31.

Meanwhile Maninagar police sent his blood sample to Forensic Science laboratory to know the exact reason behind the boy’s death.

According to the report given by FSL to Maninagar police on Saturday, Michael died due to faulty blood transfusion.

Based on the report, Maninagar police have lodged a case against Dr Nadeem and Dr Gaurav for causing death due to negligence of duty.
