On the second day of resident doctors' state-wide strike on Friday, about 1,000 resident doctors took out a silent rally from the Civil Hospital, Asarva to the collectorate in Shahibaugh. They submitted a memorandum to the Ahmedabad district collector. There were no indications of an early resolution of the strike.

According to Gujarat Association of Resident Doctors (GARD), an informal body set up by the resident doctors of Gujarat to fight for their rights, they are aware about patients' suffering due to the strike, but are themselves helpless.

"The health department sent its representative to us on Thursday suggesting that we call off the strike. They asked for two more months to work out a policy to accommodate our demands," said a member of GARD. "However, we refused to withdraw the strike as the government is doing nothing other than giving us hollow promises," said the member.

As part of their protest, the resident doctors will organise a blood camp on Saturday. Students from other faculties like dental and physiotherapy will also join the cause.
Meanwhile, the hospital administration is trying hard to manage the flow of patients, and if they are to be believed the situation is under control.

Medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, Dr MM Anchalia, said at present the hospital has some 85 medical officers and tutors to make sure that patients don't suffer due to lack of healthcare services. She also added that around 20 medical officers joined on Friday to improve the situation.

Commenting on the health secretary's statement that the doctors went on strike without prior warning, a GARD member said, "We had given 48-hour notice before going on strike."

Even resident doctors of municipal corporation hospitals are supporting the strike. This has caused severe problems for patients.
