Even as cases continue to pile up and the common man’s wait for justice gets longer, at least 74 judges of Delhi judiciary have pushed off on a four-day holiday to the Jim Corbett National Park in the salubrious surroundings of Nainital to relax.
Itinerary details accessed by DNA show that judges will have a relaxing weekend where they will also get a briefing on ‘conservation of wildlife and bio-diversity’, besides a boating session in Nainital Lake. How this is expected to improve the speed of trials or judgments is not clear from the itinerary.
The 74 judges on a relaxing ‘environmental retreat’ comprise nearly one-fourth of the nearly 300 judges in the city. Organised by the Delhi Judicial Academy, the four-day visit is funded by the Delhi government and began on Thursday.
This trip has paralysed the working at six district courts in the national capital that is struggling to shed its backlog of over 2.72 crore pending cases as of March 2010.
However, defending the trip, Tulsi Ram, who works in the administration department of the academy, told DNA that this was meant for “personality development and would also act as a stress-buster” for the judges.
“They will also get to interact with each other, which otherwise is not possible for them during their busy and tiring routines. It is basically a retreat course so that they get out of their monotonous life,” the officer told DNA.
“The retreat programme began on the behest of the idea mooted by high court judges who passed a resolution last year and jotted down this exercise,” the officer said.
Another batch of judges is all set to push off to Dehradun and the hill stations of Mussoorie and Dhanolti from May 10 to May13. So while the litigants sweat it out in Delhi’s merciless heat, hoping for justice, the taxes they pay will be helping these judges from the lower courts bust some stress.
