Railway minister Mamata Banerjee has allocated funds to build new subways, road over bridges and also additional platforms on local stations to ease crowding. This will also address the issues of trespassing and crowding in the city.

The detailed budget programme that was released by the ministry of railways after the budget speech has allocated money for building the long-pending footover bridge at Thane, a new bridge with elevators at Dadar, more than six road over bridge subways at the Kurla terminus and Virar, escalators at local stations and a new double-discharge platform at Parel station to ease crowding.

Funds have also been allocated to upgrade suburban stations of Thane, Kurla Terminus, Dadar, Andheri and Borivli in a time-bound manner.

Commuters at Thane and Parel had complained to the Central Railway about too much crowd at the station, which the ministry seems to have looked at by sanctioning a new platform for Parel and a bridge at Thane.

There are several new footover bridges, some with lifts, planned at Thane, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivli, Lower Parel, Elphinston Road, Goregaon, Bandra, Vasai Road, Nalasopara, Dadar and Virar.

Money has also been allocated for escalators at six stations on WR and four on CR. Trains on WR would get longer as the ministry has given money to extend platforms at Bandra terminus for 26-coach trains.

Meanwhile, commuters from Thane said they were unhappy with Didi as the ministry of railways has sanctioned a 6-metre wide new foot-over bridge against the 12-metre wide bridge that was promised earlier. “The CR had promised us a 12-metre wide bridge for Thane, but we were surprised to find approval for a 6-metre wide bridge, half the promised width. It may not be able to handle the crowding at the station,” Rameshkumar Karne, a Thane commuter said.
