Vaghela and Kutapatti were allowed to leave after being interrogated over their alleged Naxal connections.
The two people who were detained by Kamrej Police of the Surat rural police station were released on Tuesday night. Amrit Vaghela, the Dalit activist and Hansa Kutapatti, wife of the arrested alleged Naxalite, Shrinivas Kutapatti were interrogated in this connection.
Talking to DNA, Vaghela said that he was summoned by the police for interrogation on Monday, but was not allowed to go till Tuesday night. "I was kept along with Kutapatti and was also interrogated for various reasons," Vaghela said.
Vaghela's niece and Kutapatti's wife were also detained by the Kamrej police from Monday night to Tuesday night. Inspector general of police, Surat Range, AK Singh said that both of them were summoned as they were required to be interrogated in the investigation over their alleged Naxalite connections.
Singh said that both of them were not illegally detained but were asked to co-operate in the investigation and they did that. "Both of them co-operated in the investigations and they were not mistreated at all," Singh said.
Vaghela, meanwhile, also said that they were called by the police on Monday. "We went there on our own and remained there till they were through with their interrogation," he said.
A press conference in connection with the alleged detention was held in the city on Tuesday afternoon. Eminent activists, including advocate Girish Patel, were present at the press conference and expressed anger against the detention.
Shrinivas was arrested early on Monday morning and is currently in police remand for his alleged connections to the arrested Naxalite Surya Devra.
Singh further informed DNA that the investigation in the Naxal related activities in Gujarat is moving smoothly and if found
some more people may be arrested from the state.
