Hundreds of rail and air passengers were left stranded here on Thursday as a thick fog enveloped the capital.
At the Indira Gandhi International Airport, around 25 domestic flights and over 10 international flights were delayed for three to four hours. Runway visibility dropped below 50 meters. Minimum 150 metres visibility is needed for take off.
“The CAT III landing system was activated to help landing and take off of the flights. Due to low visibility many flights were delayed, diverted or rescheduled,” said an airport official.
As many as 24 trains to Delhi were delayed. “Thirteen trains were cancelled due to the fog while another six were terminated short of Delhi. Nine trains have been rescheduled due to the inclement weather,” said a railways official.
Many trains like the Northeast Express, Taj Express, Himalayan
Queen, Bhopal Shatabdi, Lucknow Shatabdi, Puri Express, Shan-e-Punjab, Delhi Jogbani Express and New Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani, were delayed or terminated.
The minimum temperature recorded was 6.2, one notch above average while the maximum was around 19 degrees Celsius, two notches below average, the Met office said.
The minimum temperature on Wednesday was 5.6 degrees Celsius while the maximum stood at 19 degrees Celsius.
The traffic on Delhi roads was also slow due to the engulfing fog.
