Deceased child's kidney transplated to father in Chennai

Five-year-old Janani's liver, which was also harvested, is being airlifted to Delhi for a recipient at Apollo Hospital there.

\Kidneys of a five-year-old girl, who died in a road accident, was successfully transplanted to her father, a kidney patient, in the Government General Hospital in Chennai today.

"The transplant surgery, which began in the morning and continued for five hours, was successful and the patient is normal," the hospital dean J Mohanasundram told PTI.

An employee of sugar factory in Nellore district, Chandrasekaran, was a chronic kidney patient and was under haemodialyis.

His daughter Janani, who was seriously injured in a road accident on Tuesday, was admitted to Christian Medical College
Hospital in Vellore, from where she was shifted to the Government General Hosptial in Chennai.

She was declared brain dead yesterday and the doctors, after getting the consent of the child's parents, performed the surgery, Mohanasundaram said.

Janani's liver, which was also harvested, is being airlifted to Delhi for a recipient at Apollo Hospital there.

Organ transplantation rules in the state were recently amended to enable blood relatives and spouses to receive organs from a deceased person without waiting for their turn as per the registry.
