As you despair, reading the morning newspaper replete with several incidents of crime and think of the worsening law and order situation, here is a statistic that may cheer you up. The number of crimes in zone-1 of the city during the period from June 15 to October 31 this year has dropped compared to the corresponding period in 2010.

The major crimes that have seen a drop include chain-snatching, murder, robbery, break-ins and theft. However, those related to prohibition and gambling are on a rise.

Incidents of chain-snatching dropped to 67 cases compared to the 118 last year. Murders too fell from 11 to 6, while there were 95 incidents of robbery compared to 149 in 2010. Talking about the trend,

DCP, zone-1 Sandeep Singh attributed this drop in figures to better policing.

"We plotted the areas where a particular crime was on rise and then concentrated on tackling it," he said. "For example, we realised that Vastrapur, Anandnagar, Ghatlodia and Ellisbridge areas were the target areas of chain snatchers. So we set up various teams to concentrate on these areas and this is what has helped bring down the cases of chain snatching," he said.
Singh, however, said that

the areas were once again seeing a rise in such incidents. "Fake
cops have become active once again, and are targeting these
areas. So now, we have to come up with a new strategy to handle them," he said.

During the June-October period, detection of crime rose by
6% while chargesheets were filed in 2,431 cases during these four months.

6,429 other applications were also dealt with during this period while 34 wanted criminals were nabbed, suggests the data.
