CPI(M) leaders in Kerala today condemned the arrest of party politbureau member Brinda Karat near Madurai, dubbing it as "most undemocratic."

"Brinda was on her way to mobilise public opinion against heinous caste discrimination prevailing in a village near Madurai. There was no justification on the part of police to have prevented her from going there," said KK Shylaja, CPI(M)
MLA and State president of all India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA).

"One is at a loss to know at whose behest Brinda and AIDWA leaders accompanying her were stopped from going to the village to find out the true magnitude of the caste oppression in that village", she told reporters.

She recalled that AIDWA had organised similar protests in Tamil Nadu and other parts of the village, since women are those who suffer the most in all discriminatory practices in society.

CPI(M) central Committee member and state health minister PK Sreemathi also voiced strong protest over the arrest.
