A cow gored a bear to death when it tried to attack its calf at Kadmbur near here, forest officials said today.
The incident occurred when the bear entered the Layanthotti tribal hamlet at Karalayam in the Kadambur forest yesterday.
The bear had earlier attacked and killed three goats tied in front of a house, consuming the meat. Then it proceeded to another house where it attacked two persons injuring them. However, they managed to escape, officials said.
The bear then noticed the cow and calf tied to a post before a house and tried to attack the calf. The cow rushed to the calf's rescue and retaliated using its horns, injuring the bear seriously which fell down dead, officials said.
Officials buried the carcass in the forest.
Sources said the bear weighed over 60 kg adding its age might be around 28 to 30 years.
