The mission to conserve heritage just got a touch of music! A unique initiative will be unveiled on Friday when the World Heritage Day celebrations will kickstart at the Sarkhej Roza with 13 percussionists, headed by tabla maestro Fazal Qureshi, performing.

Qureshi, son and student of table legend the late Ustad Alla Rakha Khan, says he would launch a mission to conserve heritage in Ahmedabad with the help of music.

Mega Drum, the musical extravaganza to mark the beginning of the World Heritage Day on Friday, is being organised by a Mumbai based organisation, Craft of Art and the Sarkhej Roza Committee.

The World Heritage celebrations will be inaugurated by chief minister Narendra Modi at Sarkhej Roza. "The basic idea is to highlight historical monuments and their connect with people. Sarkhej Roza is just the beginning and I would like to do concerts at other heritage monuments like the Bhadra Fort or in Pols to spread awareness of heritage conservation with the power of music," Qureshi told DNA.

Birwa Qureshi, wife of Fazal Qureshi and founder of Craft of Art said that the idea of a musical feast at Sarkhej Roza was to draw people to heritage monuments. "If such festivals are organized at these sites, it would bring people to it. Hence, we have planned to use these spaces and include heritage monuments for performing arts," said Birwa, an artiste who belongs to Ahmedabad.

More good news is that along with the musical feast, there would also be various other performances from different parts of India.

"The programme will  also have a dance performance by artists from Manipur and Goan music and traditional instruments of Maharashtra. And so, I call the performance 'Sound of India'," said Fazal Qureshi. On Saturday, the second day of the event, a sitar performance will enthrall Amdavadis.

Besides the cultural treat provided by the two-day event, a permanent exhibition of photographs and history of Sarkhej Roza would also be on display at the heritage monuments.

"Apart from it, the exhibition would also talk about the current situation of Sarkhej Roza and what needs to be done to preserve the monument. I hope this event becomes an example for the city and its citizens to take more note of such initiatives. We need to believe in our cities and ourselves," said Sachin Desai, who has designed the panels for the exhibition.
