Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today said the ruling BSP in UP should first clear several already sanctioned Central projects announced for his parliamentary constituency Amethi, instead of demanding fresh packages for the newly-formed district.

At a district-level vigilance and monitoring committee meeting of the newly-constituted district comprising Amethi, Gandhi asked Gauriganj MLA Chandra Prakash Mishra Matiyari to pressurise the state government to get clearance for the already sanctioned Union government projects in Amethi instead of asking for fresh financial package, party sources said.

Matiyari had demanded a Rs5,000-crore special package for the development of the newly-created district.

Rahul said the central-sponsored projects, if cleared by the Mayawati government, would provide employment to over 15 thousand people in the district.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi inaugurated a health camp at Haliapur area of his constituency in which 1,932 people were examined and given medicines.

He met locals at different points during his day-long tour and had his lunch, parking his vehicle on the roadside.
