Last Valentine’s Day, white supplanted black as the colour that flashed voguish confidence and romance; but this February 14, scores of Amdavadis will exchange affirmations of love, and even wedding vows, in a blaze of red.

Red roses have traditionally signalled love and attraction, but on Valentine’s Day 2010, the city’s smart set has selected party dresses steeped in the rich crimson hue. “In fact, highlighting one’s hair with red is also becoming a trend,” said Yalan Siao, a city-based beautician.

Ahmedabad stylists said that since the Valentine’s Day was drawing more celebrants every year, red - with its long-entrenched association with the occasion - was gaining an upper hand over other colours. Sheetal Shah, a regular partygoer said, “Earlier, finding a red single-piece dress in an Amdavadi store was an unthinkable proposition.”

Shah said now the situation was dramatically different. “You visit any store, and you will be able to pick up an array of sexy red dresses,” she said. “And the best part is that you do not have to buy extra accessories. Black accessories match really well with the reds.”
