Three years ago, the United Nations had declared October 2, birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, as the International Day of Non-Violence. This year the grand-daughter of Mahatma Gandhi, Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee has made a unique request to people of India and the world.

She wants the world and the country to observe one minute of silence on Gandhi Jayanti as a way of paying homage to non-violence in today’s context.

In a concept note sent to vice-chancellor (V-C) of Gujarat Vidyapith (GV), Sudarshan Iyengar, Bhattacharjee has written, ‘Let us visualise a cosmic thread flowing from the wheel of eternity. This will be a flow of harmony that can orbit the Earth in 24 hours, starting at October 2 midnight from Japan. After a minute of silence and introspection by humanity, it moves westwards to encircle the whole of Earth in 24 hours. This can be a celebration of our consciousness for homage to non-violence in today’s context.’

She has sent the same letter to universities across the world. In this note, Bhattacharjee has also towards the end suggested that a one minute silence be observed in each time zone during
the day time.

Further in the letter she writes, ‘As we have, some time back, observed the saving of electricity for one hour all over the world, a minute of silence will be a global moment of enlightenment of the soul.’

Bhattacharjee has, through her letter, requested that this one minute of silence be observed across all departments, centres and colleges of the Vidyapith. Speaking about the letter, Iyengar said, “Vidyapith was founded in 1920 by Mahatma Gandhi and he was also the first chancellor of the university. And hence we will definitely observe this one minute silence on October 2.” Iyengar said Bhattacharjee has written in her letter to him that Gandhi belongs to the entire humanity. “There should be a celebration to bind people all over the world; across all religious, social and political divisions,’ the letter states.

“This is the right day and the right way to celebrate the birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation,” said Iyengar.
