An eight-year-old boy was killed and another injured today when a grenade accidently exploded at a firing range in Mendhar town of the district, police said.
The grenade exploded when two brothers were collecting scrap at the firing range, about 160-kms from Jammu this evening, police sources said.
An 8-year-old boy identified as Iftkar Ahmed died on the spot, while his brother 10-year-old Mukhtiyar Ahmed received serious injuries, they said, adding both of them were later rushed to sub-district hospital at Mendhar where Iftikhar was declared brought dead.
The condition of the injured is stated to be critical, they said and added body of the deceased was handed over to his family members for performing the last rites after conducting legal formalities.
Meanwhile, several hundred people held a protest demonstration and blocked vehicular traffic in Mendhar town over the killing of a villager allegedly by the army, police sources said.
Hundreds of people held protest demonstration at Mir Chowk in the town for about six hours from 0800 hours today in protest against the death of Nazir Hussain in firing by army personnel, they said.
Hussain's body had been recovered by police in the morning from Suian forest area in the town, they said, adding people dispersed at 14:00 hours after being assured by the police that inquest proceedings under section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been initiated into the case.
Meanwhile, an army spokesperson said in Jammu that there was no involvement of army personnel in the death of the civilian as per an internal investigation.
