Security had never been tighter for Bengaluru’s big new year bash. However, the city police have promised Bangaloreans they would not allow security concerns mar their enjoyment of the occasion.

The apprehension following a nationwide terror alert ahead of New Year, especially in Bangalore, Mumbai and Goa, is nothing but a warning, said some senior police officers.

Police commissioner Shankar Bidari confirmed, “All precautionary measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and security of citizens.”

Several armed policemen and men in plainclothes will be stationed at various parts of the city. They will keep watch over hotels and lodges, scrutinising out-of-ordinary occurrences. As a mandate, guests checking into hotels must submit their photographs.

Every bar in the city must seek permission from the excise department for their business to remain open beyond midnight on 31 December 2010.

The commissioner also warned the bars and hotels not to create nuisance to neighbours by playing loud music.

The police have appealed to  people to be careful while attending parties in remote or isolated localities. “Single women and girls in particular should shun away from such parties,” he asserted.

Additional commissioner of police (law and order) T Sunil Kumar said they would keep a close watch on sensitive areas. They also plan to deploy additional force. The city’s entire police strength of 18,000 will be on duty on December 31, he added. He also warned motorists against drunken driving.

“Teenagers and college girls should not walk alone on the roads on New Year’s eve,” warned BB Ashok Kumar, assistant commissioner of police (Pulakeshinagar subdivision).

Amid the security preparations, there are some who have planned a perfect getaway for New Year. To be away from the din and disturbance of the madding crowd, some people are heading out of the city to celebrate New Year.

“We have booked rooms in a private resort outside Bangalore,” said Uday Dev, a software engineer.

“Entry to Nandi Hills has been barred after 6pm on December 31,” Chikkaballapur police said.
