Police on Saturday arrested four lawyers in connection with the attack on mediapersons and policemen inside the City Civil Court complex on Friday. They also registered 31 cases relating to the brawl.

Police commissioner BG Jyothi Prakash Mirji said the four arrested lawyers were AP Ranganath, Somesh, Arun Nayak and Santosh.

Produced before a magistrate at night, Ranganath,  Nayak and Santosh were remanded to judicial custody till March 5. Somesh was being interrogated till reports last came.

Mirji said the four lawyers were arrested based on substantial evidence that they had engaged in rioting. Denying that political pressure was behind the arrest of Ranganath, who is associated with the JD(S) and is general secretary of the Advocates Association of Bangalore, Mirji said there was substantial evidence that Ranganath had provoked his fellow lawyers to attack the media and police.

Mirji said a few other lawyers would be arrested soon and special police teams were gathering information about the whereabouts of the lawyers who were involved in Friday’s rioting.

He said police would arrest all the lawyers who were involved. “Our police officials saw the incident and they can identify the accused advocates,” he said. “They are collecting more information about the absconding persons.” Apart from the arrested lawyers, police have so far identified 23 other lawyers involved in the brawl: Mahesh, Dogadi, Rajashekar, Ramanjaneya, Narayana Swamy, Devendra, Muniswamy, Suresh, Aravinda Gowda Shetty, Mohan Dore, Ramanjaneya, Srinivas, Venkatarama Reddy, Prasad Kumar, Lakshman, Srinivas, Sandeep Shetty, K Ramesh, Raghu, N Manjunath, Girish, Shivakumar and Shashidhar.

The police mentioned these names in the First Information Report (FIR). Police are looking for about 1,000 other lawyers involved in Friday’s attack. Additional commissioner of police (law and order) T Suneel Kumar said 10 police teams had been formed to look into the 31 cases registered at Ulsoor Gate police station. Each team will be responsible for collecting evidence and arresting the accused lawyers.

The investigating teams have already collected some video footage, photographs that appeared in the media and the visuals shot by police cameramen to identify the rioters. Some lawyers who were seen pelting stones and assaulting journalists and policemen have been identified and the police are collecting additional details about them. Once adequate information is collected, they will be put behind bars, the police said.

Cases have been registered under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapon), 307 (attempt to murder), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty), 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage), 427 (mischief causing damage) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Mirji said High Court judge Justice KL Manjunath’s driver, Jagadeeshaiah, had filed a police complaint on Saturday that he was attacked and robbed by a group of 15-20 advocates.

“Jagadeeshaiah has stated that he had brought the justice to the City Civil Court premises on Friday afternoon and the justice was discussing with some other judges,” he said. “Meanwhile, about 15-20 advocates set fire to three-four vehicles and assaulted him. They also allegedly robbed him of his gold chain, mobile phone and `1,900. A case has been registered in this connection.” Mirji said 52 police personnel—including deputy commissioner of police (Central) G Ramesh—were injured when lawyers attacked them on Friday. Five of them are still in hospital.

Ten advocates and three mediapersons were also reportedly injured in the Friday incident.
