The Assam police had registered a case of cyber crime after advocate Ajoy Hazarika received the mail inviting him to attend a military training in Afghanistan for jihad.
A team of Special Task Force (STF) of Assam police may soon visit the city to trace and investigate a mobile phone number mentioned in an email sent to a Guwahati-based advocate. The mail allegedly invited the advocate to join the jihad movement.
The Assam police had registered a case of cyber crime after advocate Ajoy Hazarika received the mail inviting him to attend a military training in Afghanistan for jihad. The phone number in the mail is an Ahmedabad-based number.
"We are planning to send a STF team to Gujarat. But many things are still at the primary stage and are being investigated," said Manvendra Rai, additional superintendent of police, STF, Guwahati told DNA. He also confirmed that the mobile number mentioned in the mail had been traced to Gujarat. The STF is investigating the matter and trying to trace the sender of the mail through the Internet protocol address. It will also check the phone number mentioned in the email. The mail contained six email accounts and a cellphone number for 'interested candidates'.
"The mail landed in my inbox on October 15 but I discovered it only last evening when I was checking my mail," Hazarika told DNA on phone from Guwahati. In the email, the sender said, "I am acting on behalf of a group looking to recruit believers to attend military training in Afghanistan, and to continue the Holy Jihad. After martyrdom, your families will be compensated with $5 million. If you are a devout believer, please contact me via one of the following email accounts."
However, a preliminary probe has revealed that the email ID used by the sender is of a marketing company. The company maintains a database of email IDs and provides it to their clients for bulk mailing for marketing and selling their products and services.
