Narayan Sai, son of the controversial guru Asaram Bapu, surprised everyone with his presence at the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's (VHP) conference in Pirana village on Monday, the last day of the three-day event.

Sai and his father have been evading summons issued by the commission investigating the mysterious death of two boys near Asaram's ashram in Motera. The two minor boys were students of the Asaram gurukul.

The VHP, however, claimed that Sai had not literally been 'invited' but, being a 'saint', he was informed about the event. Dharmendra Bhevani, state coordinator of VHP's Dharm Prasaar wing, said that Sai had come to 'grace' the event as his organisation considers every Hindu saint as its member.

On the last day of the conference, several religious preachers delivered inflammatory speeches and appealed to delegates to start anti-conversion drives back home in their towns and villages.

Thousands of VHP members from different states participated in the conference at Pirana, a village 25 km away from Ahmedabad. The village is famous for its 600-year-old dargah (shrine) of Sufi saint Imam Shah Baba and is a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity.

Most speakers at the three-day event gave provocative speeches directed against minorities. Their speeches were broadcast through loudspeakers.

On Monday, the international general secretary of the VHP, Pravin Togadia, came up with some radical ideas for putting an end to conversion and the so-called 'problems' in Hindu society.

During the three-day event, the VHP speakers bombarded the village with all kinds of Hindu fundamentalist ideas, forgetting that Pirana symbolises tolerance and Hindu-Muslim unity. The Muslim trustees of the shrine kept away from the RSS-run Gurukul.
