More than two weeks after the shocking schoolgirl gang-rape case, public anger over the incident is yet to subside. On Friday, a citizen tried to attack the rapists in the court campus, but he only managed to slap one of the accused, before he was overpowered by the cops.
According to information, the three gang-rape accused were taken to court on Friday afternoon as their 14-day remand period came to an end. In view of the attack on the rape accused in new civil hospital, police had made tight security arrangements in the court campus, and even forced suspicious people to leave as a precaution.
Officials said the three gang-rape accused were sent to judicial custody by the chief court, as the crime branch sleuths did not seek additional remand period. It was expected that police would seek extension in remand period, but the police decided otherwise.
As the police officials were leaving the court premises with the rapists, a citizen tried to attack the rape accused. He targeted Shahid Saiyed, as the other two accused were already in the police van by then. However, he could only manage to give a slap on Shahid’s head before he was overpowered by the accompanying policemen.
The attacker was later identified as Jayanti Parmar, a resident of Umra village, who was taken into custody by police, while the trio was taken to Surat sub-jail. The accused will now cool their heels in the sub-jail, where special arrangements have been made to protect them from the other inmates.
The Umra police later registered a case under IPC 186 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of public function) and 323 (voluntarily causing harm) against Parmar and arrested him, officials said. It is believed that Parmar was angry at the rapists for their heinous crime, but the exact reason that led him to attack the rape accused is not known.
Earlier, on June 13, a day after the shocking crime, the three rape accused were targeted by a mob, including women, at new civil hospital. The mob got hold of Shahid Saiyed and gave a severe thrashing to him, while the other two were saved by policemen.
The shocking incident took place in the wee hours of June 12 when Shahid Saiyed, Tariq Saiyed and Abu Bacher Shaikh, abducted and allegedly gang-raped a schoolgirl in a moving car. The trio had even filmed the heinous crime in their mobile phones. However, they were caught by police within a few hours of the crime.
