Unseasonal winter rainfall in the city caught Amdavadis off guard on a lazy Sunday morning.

Light showers for about an hour from 9 am and cloudy skies for most part of the day made citizens scurry for their woollies which most had discarded owing to the rise in temperature in the past few days.

"I was going for a football match with my friends when it started to pour. I was not at all expecting rainfall in chilly winter mornings. I had to rush back home and change my plans," said Shrinil Vyas, a student.

According to Met department, western disturbances passing through lower latitudes caused instability in atmospheric conditions leading to formation of strong clouds in Gujarat.

"Such unseasonal showers are common during winter as they are linked with western disturbances in the atmosphere. As and when air currents pass through northern part of the country, rainfall is expected in Gujarat, said Kamaljit Ray, director (forecasting), India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmedabad.

The temperatures in the city remained at 15 degrees Celsius at its lowest and wind blowing at 14 km/h north-North West on Sunday night.

Amdavadis will experience a partly cloudy sky at 81 Fahrenheit with winds blowing North East at 10 to 15 mph on January 4.

Met department further adds that Amdavadis can expect a cool winter without possibility of showers in coming days.

"It was a pleasant experience while it lasted. But I wish there is no more such sudden unexpected rains because it increases the cold in the air, making it even worse for elders and the poor" said Ghulam Naqvi, a businessman.
