If you are hoping for relief from the menace of stray cattle on city roads, you will be disappointed to read this. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has no clear or effective plan of action to tackle the problem of stray cattle. Even the ruling BJP feels helpless and accuses the administrative wing of not taking effective measures in this direction.

The problem of stray cattle on the city's roads is getting worse by the day. There is hardly any road in the city which is free from stray cows. "This has been a problem since long. The situation becomes worse during monsoon but the civic body has hardly made an effort to find a permanent solution to the problem," said Siddharth Mehta, a resident of Naranpura.

Some people, on the other hand, blame the Maldhari community for the problem. "Cattle provide the Maldharis a means of livelihood. But they should not let their cattle roam freely on the roads causing problems for others," said Namrata Panchal, a resident of Shahpur.  However, Panchal is against penalising the Maldharis, saying that it is not a solution for the problem of stray cattle. But people engaged in animal husbandry must understand their responsibility towards society, she said.

Meanwhile, lack of an effective plan to curb the cattle menace has upset not only the opposition but also the ruling party in the civic body. Dr Suresh Patel, chairman of AMC's health and solid waste management committee, said that despite several reminders, the administration has failed to take any action to curb the cattle menace in the city.

"The administration is yet to come up with a plan to tackle the problem. People are suffering but the administration is not taking the problem," said Patel.

The Cattle Nuisance and Control Department (CNCD) is facing an acute shortage of manpower. There are limitations to what the department can do when it comes to catching cattle and locking them in a cattle shed. "We have to be careful of traffic and other obstacles while catching stray cattle. There have been reports of our teams being attacked when they are trying to catch stray cattle," said Dilip Gor, deputy municipal commissioner of CNCD.

The department will send two teams to catch stray cattle in city, said Gor. He stressed on need to sensitise Maldharis to the problems faced by ordinary people because of their cattle.
