This was not the first time that an ambulance carrying a seriously ill patient was held up or diverted because of a VIP function, but this time, hopefully,  the patient did not die.

An ambulance carrying a woman who had suffered a severe heart attack reportedly had to take a longer route on Sunday morning because of security arrangements in place for the chief minister's function at Shahid Smarak near Lal Darwaja. Strangely, officials of the VS hospital where the patient was deposited by the ambulance staff denied that they had received such a patient.

The 108 EMRI ambulance reportedly picked up the patient, Raziabanu Imtiyaz Ahmed, from Topiwalani Pol in Dariapur area at around 8.30 am on Sunday. Sources in the EMERI said the paramedical staff in the ambulance had put Raziabanu on oxygen and were taking her to VS Hospital. But the vehicle had to take a U-turn at Shahid Smarak and take the Gita Mandir route to reach the hospital, the sources said.

The ambulance was reportedly not allowed to go past the Shahid Smarak along the shorter route to the hospital as chief minister Narendra Modi had arrived to pay his tributes to the martyrs of Maha-Gujarat Movement.

"When we pick up a patient from Dariapur area, we generally take the Rantiawadi-to-VS Hospital route via Lal Darwaja," said a source in the 108 EMRI. "We use the Gita Mandir route only when we pick up patients from Kalupur, Sarangpur and Khadia."

The source further said that usually the police inform them about public functions on the route but on Sunday there was no intimation from the police either. "Nobody asked us to stop until we reached the platform built for the chief minister," another source said. "The police did not allow us to go any further. Hence, we took a U-turn and used the Gita Mandir route to reach the hospital."
