Samajwadi Party (SP) general secretary Amar Singh has done yet another sting operation to embarrass the Mayawati government. This time, two top officials in the Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s secretariat are in the dock.

The SP leader has charged them with threatening an MLC (member of legislative council) to give up a portion of his ancestral land to be annexed to the Mayawati residence in Lucknow.

Another charge is about the government trying to influence Supreme Court functioning. Amar also alleged that mafia don Mukhtar Ansari, who is in jail, had been making threatening calls from the CM’s residence to the SP’s West Bengal unit chief Vijay Upadhyay.

Amar released CDs with taped conversations of MLC Sunil Singh with UP cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh and principal secretary to the CM, Shailesh Krishna, on Sunday. Along with SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, he met governor BL Joshi to complain about the incident.

In the conversation played before the media, Singh is heard pressurising the MLC to meet him to discuss the matter.  An even more serious charge against the IAS officer is his reference to how an impending change in the SC bench hearing the case would alter things. “This bench will be changed after the 27th (October) and then things will be alright,” Krishna says. Amar pointed out that the bench of justices BN Agarwal and Aftab Alam was changed on October 27 due to justice Agarwal’s retirement. “Surprisingly, the case was listed last week before a new bench, instead of a bench of which justice Alam was a part,” he said.
