Allahabad HC extends stay on Amar Singh's arrest till July 29

The Allahabad high court today extended till July 29 the stay on the arrest of expelled SP leader Amar Singh in connection with a graft case.
       
A Division Bench comprising justices Imtiyaz Murtaza and NA Moonis passed the order on a writ petition filed by Singh, who had challenged an FIR lodged at Babpurwa police station of Kanpur under various sections of Indian Penal Code, Prevention of Corruption Act and Money Laundering Act.
     
In the FIR dated October 15, 2009, the complainant Shiva Kant Tripathi accused Singh of having committed irregularities to the tune of thousands of crores of rupees in his capacity as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Development Council while the state was under Samajwadi Party rule.
         
Singh, who was expelled from Samajwadi Party in February, has refuted the charges saying that the Development Council was an advisory body and as its Chairman he could not facilitate awarding of contracts to private companies as alleged in the FIR.
