The rescheduling of the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) entrance exam on Sunday caused much confusion at exam centres in Ahmedabad. The AIEEE, which is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), is being held online for the first time this year.

Besides causing uncertainty and confusion at examination centres in the city, the rescheduling of the two exams to new timings also disrupted the travel plans of candidates who had come from outside the city. For students appearing in both the AIEEE and the AFMC examination, the AIEEE will again be held on May 8.

It was the AIEEE that was first shifted to new timings on Sunday after questions set for the day's examination leaked in Uttar Pradesh. Before that, the two papers of the examination were to be held from 9.30 am and 2 pm, respectively. However, after rescheduling, the first paper was held from 12 noon to 3 pm while the second was held from 4 pm to 7 pm.

This shifting of examination timings caused many problems for candidates who had come from outside Ahmedabad with their parents. Most of them were forced to delay their departure till late in the night while many others decided to stay in the city overnight.
At some centres, students were not called into the examination hall at 9 am without any explanation for the delay. The resulting uncertainty caused much tension and confusion among students.

The experience of candidates at some other centres in the city was stranger still. Students at the DPS Gandhinagar examination centre were called into the exam hall at 8:30 am, given the questions and were then suddenly asked to leave the exam hall after a few minutes.

"It was very confusing as no authority was ready to answer why the students were sent out immediately," said Hemant Pandya, a parent. "The authorities put out a notice stating that the examination had been rescheduled to 12 noon. But they did not tell us why."  When contacted, a CBSE official said they were simply following instructions.

Meanwhile, the AFMC exam, which was originally scheduled to be held at 2.30 pm, was also postponed and held at 4.30 pm. As for the students who are appearing in both AIEEE and the AFMC examination, the AIEEE was postponed to May 8. The May 8 exam will be held at the same centre and the same  admit card will be valid.

It may be recalled that for the convenience of students appearing in both the examinations, the CBSE had decided to give them the same centre for AIEEE as the centre in which they were to appear in the AFMC exam.

But after the rescheduling on Sunday, the CBSE decided that those centres which were to hold both the examinations will now conduct only the AFMC exam on Sunday. The AIEEE would be held at these centres on May 8.
