Graduates holding a Bachelors degree in biomedical engineering are in for a double shock this year. From now on, they have been denied from shifting their discipline for their Masters; meanwhile, those wishing to pursue a Masters in their own field will face stiff competition as there are only 18 seats for the subject in the state.
“While students who pass out in EC, IT and other streams are allowed to apply for Masters in a different discipline, students of biomedical engineering are denied from changing their discipline. Why this discrimination?” asked a biomedical engineering student of LD College of Engineering. The student alleged that authorities of LD College and Gujarat Technical University (GTU) denied students forms for interdisciplinary change.
“Since August 1 and 2 are the last dates for submitting forms, we want authorities to help us change our discipline,” he said. However, MN Patel, chairman, Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC), says the provision for changing the discipline is not given to students of other streams either. “Why should students change their disciplines for Masters? They have to continue with the same discipline or else their promotion and transfers in future jobs will be affected.”
The vice-chancellor of GTU Akshay Agarwal said, “When this issue was discussed with the admission committee, I was told that it is being done in interest of the students. Although this year it is not possible, I will try to sort the matter next year.” Meanwhile, another student from CU Shah College said, “There is only one government college in Gandhinagar that provides Masters in our field; unfortunately it has only 18 seats to offer. Besides, of these 18, only around nine seats are for the open category.”
