Citizens will enjoy a hi-tech and safe ride in Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services (AMTS) buses which will soon get a makeover with a lot of facilities planned for the benefit of the commuters.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) proposes to make travel for the citizens more comfortable and secure. For this, the civic body has will install LCD screens, video cameras and Global Positioning System (GPS) in their fleet of buses.

Speaking to DNA, chairman of AMTS, Amit Shah said, "To utilize the space available in the bus, the rear side of the driver's seat will be used to install LCD screens. The screen will have advertisements and also a 20-minute programme which will help to create awareness among the citizens about government's programmes and schemes."

The AMTS had carried out a pilot project by installing LCD screens in 50 AMTS buses and is now planning to set them up in 550 buses.

Apart from optimum utilisation of space, the installation of LCD screens in the bus will turn out to be an income generator for AMTS. Officials said that the average income from LCD screens will be around Rs 1,050 per bus per month and the contract is for seven years. However, the initial investment of installing the screens will cost AMC as much as Rs4-5 crore.

Amit Shah said that the installation work is going on. "It will be completed in three months and the agency, which has been appointed through tenders, has been given the contract of installing video cameras and GPS as well."

Shah added that video cameras will record the goings-on and help authorities to catch or stop petty crimes like pick-pocketing, eve-teasing etc. He further said that presently there are 200 buses which have GPS systems. This helps in tracking the actual route and stops of AMTS buses as citizens had complained that buses do not always stop at the bus stands.
