Medical resident doctors working at LG Hospital in the city it seems, doesn’t know right from wrong and left from right! The third year medical students on Tuesday operated on the left hand of 9-year-old Kaushik and inserted plates and nails in it.

Throughout the procedure, they did not realise that the left hand was not fractured and that it was the right hand which needed medical attention! Incidentally, it was Kaushik’s mother Bhavna Lodha who realised that the wrong hand had been operated upon.

And it was Bhavna who brought it to the notice of the doctors. Kaushik was admitted to the LG Hospital at 10pm on Monday after he fractured his right hand in a fall.

“Around a month ago Kaushik had fractured his right hand and we had brought him to LG for treatment. At that time his bone was set and his hand was plastered. He was given medication and was discharged,” said a weeping Bhavna.  She said Kaushik again fell down while playing at her parent’s house in Patan.

“He once again fractured his right hand. Hence, I rushed him to LG hospital as they already had his previous medical records,” said Bhavna. Bhavna said she was initially refused admission as she was Rs10 short of the total fee for the admission. The matter was resolved after a relative footed the bill.  Bhavna was alone when Kaushik was taken to the operation theatre (OT).  LG Superintendent Dr RG Suraila said the doctors who operated the child were medical students. “The doctors were identified as third year student, Jaimin Chavda and second year students, Umesh Choudhary and Kaushal Shah. They were assisted by others but no senior doctor was present during the operation. The three however were in touch with their senior doctor and associate professor over the phone,” said Dr Suraila.

It should be noted that as per the rule, students are only allowed to assist senior doctors. They are not allowed to carry out such operations in the absence of a senior doctor. In this case, their senior doctor and associate professor, Dr Bhavesh Jaisalmer was on leave and hence gave them instructions about the operation on phone!

"Rods and nails have been inserted into my child's left hand. They took him inside the operation theatre once again at 2.50pm on Tuesday, for a re-operation. We have written a complaint to the hospital superintendent and have also lodged a complaint with Rambaug police station", revealed Kaushik's father Manoj (35).
When contacted, Dr Suraila said, "The operation went wrong but don't try to blow the incident out of proportion." In his defence, Dr Suraila said, "There have been past instances when even senior and experienced doctors have made mistakes in major surgeries including that of the brain. I agree it should have never happened but now that it has, we will take strict action. The three doctors will be suspended."
