Are you relying on the corporators of your wards for protection of the saplings planted by you? Your wish is unlikely to be granted in the near future as the corporators are facing a shortage of tree guards even after allocation of adequate grants.

The elected wing blames the administrative wing for mismanagement of tree guards. However, the administrative wing cites shortage of work force for the prevailing situation.

With the onset of monsoon, tree guards are essential for protecting trees planted across the city. Almost all the city's corporators and MLAs have allotted grants for tree guards taking into consideration the increased demand in monsoon.

However, they are unable to avail of an adequate number of tree guards. As a result, they find themselves in an embarrassing situation when someone asks them for a tree guard. Corporators from both the BJP and Congress are facing similar situations.

"Even after allocation of grants, we have not received tree guards," said Iqbal Shaikh, Congress corporator from Gomtipur. He said that this is the right time for planting trees and tree guards should have been provided on time. "We need more than 250 tree guards in our ward, but have received only one-third of our demand," said a BJP corporator from India Colony ward. He said that he had to call up the deputy municipal commissioner of his zone and ask him to intervene in the matter. "Even after that, I got only 20 tree guards, which does not meet my demands by far," said the corporator in a dismal tone.

"Moreover, once you get some of the stock, the officials of the parks and garden department ask us to not call again for more tree guards. This is something unusual as we want tree guards for people and that too from grants allocated from our budget," said the corporator. They believe that if the department had completed the process of tendering for the purchase of tree guards well in time, there would not have been any shortage.

On the other hand, the administrative wing blames manpower crunch for the scenario. "We have enough stock of tree guards. Moreover, three agencies have been roped in for supplying them. However, we have no manpower for their distribution," said SK Langa, deputy municipal commissioner of parks and garden department.

Langa said that officials of his department are busy with tree plantation as well as solving complaints of fallen trees due to the rains. "However, the situation will be normal very soon," he said.
