At the recent annual Karamveer awards held in New Delhi, an Ahmedabad based NGO 'Sense International' won a national award for work done to help differently people.

Sense International works for the deaf and blind people. The NGO was formed 13 years ago with a view to help the teachers and parents in dealing with deaf and blind children.

Speaking on the occasion, founder and director of Sense, Akhil Paul said, "This award has helped a lot in creating awareness about deaf and blind children. People need to know the amount of effort required to educate such children."

Currently, Sense trains 450 parents and 30,000 deaf and blind children all over India.

Paul, who has been working in this field for the last 21 years, believes that an NGO should be genuinely interested in the betterment of society.

Talking about the current scenario, Paul said that presently our country has 3 lakh NGOs, of which only 70% are genuine.

"A lot of NGOs are coming up in each and every city of our country, but their credibility should be taken into consideration," he said.

Stating the example of 2002 earthquakes, Paul said that thousands of NGOs went to Kutch to help the victims. But, only 150 of them genuinely helped the victims and provided relief services.

Interestingly, 10 to15 NGOs are still in Kutch today helping the victims becoming independent, he added.

Sharing his future plans, Paul said, "Under the Right to Education Act, every disabled child has a right to take admission in schools. For this, we will soon work closely with government and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, to help these children study in proper schools."
